What: Newly opened Cafe Alyce is high on our list of spots offering the best brunch in Jersey City. The BYOB restaurant is located in what was formerly the Medical Center Luncheonette across the street from The Beacon. Before being redeveloped into luxury rentals, The Beacon was the original home of the Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC) and the Medical Center Luncheonette (now Cafe Alyce) served many of the hospital’s staff. The Medical Center Luncheonette eventually closed until Tory Aunspach — of Bergen Lafayette’s Hooked JC — stepped in. Aunspach, who is also responsible for reviving the JSQ Lounge, has revamped the former diner into Cafe Alyce offering hearty, made-from-scratch meals in a casual atmosphere.

Be prepared for a big, hearty meal

Interior: I never visited the original Medical Center Luncheonette so I can’t comment on how much it’s changed. However, the new space is very inviting with a low-key, come as you are vibe. That said, you won’t find any dated red-vinyl cushion seats here. Instead you’ll see exposed brick walls, large windows that look onto Montgomery, and an L-shaped counter with metal stools for solo dining. Above the entrance you’ll also find what appears to be the original Medical Center Luncheonette’s signage.
